This project was a requirement for a graduate-level course entitled training & development. The consulting project was designed to provide experience in performance appraisal, designing, and conducting a training program with an actual business.

Business Case

The problem.  Staff commonly face issues that relate to services offered to patrons such as printing documents, logging onto the school’s WiFi, logging onto the library’s computers, and computer applications.

The solution & the role of training.  Solutions will include training, best practices, and how-to. The focus will be to develop training for new staff in operating and troubleshooting the printing station, computers, and WiFi. The new training initiative will become a five-day instructional workshop for new library employees.

Expected business results. 

  1. Library assistants will spend less time helping patrons resolve technical problems with library lab computers, printer, and WiFi.

  2. Full-time staff will spend fewer hours per month assisting newer staff to become competent solving patrons’ technical problems.


Learning Objectives

Using the Brinkerhoff Six-Stage Model for training, student assistants will be able to help patrons with technology.  The gap analysis tells us that the greatest need is training in technology.  The result will lead student assistants to be more competent in the following tasks.

Basic computer lab procedures.  These procedures will be useful in teaching and showing patrons how to use the computer, printer, and copier functions. 

  • Hardware functions: turning on computers & printers, checking keyboard and mouse and display connections, connecting external USB drives, adding printer paper, and replacing printer ink.

  • Software functions: logging into computer, saving & printing documents, making copies, finding, and opening computer applications, and using the library’s website.


Evaluate Design

Goal of training.  The goal of this training is to instruct library assistants, so they can handle common and uncommon daily technical tasks and learn how to address technological questions.

Evaluation.  This design will evaluate the transfer of learning throughout the instructional flow to ensure knowledge acquisition and behavioral.  This will be completed through verbal and behavioral assessment as well as through role play.
